Two years after a double lung transplant, Pierre Bellec is preparing to take on a powerful symbolic challenge: running a relay of the 2025 Alpes-Maritimes Marathon alongside the caregivers and teams of the IHU RespirERA.
When Breathing Becomes a Challenge
Diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, Pierre Bellec saw his daily life gradually shrink to cautious movements designed to avoid shortness of breath. His lung capacity had dropped to just 40%, and the hope of returning to an active life seemed distant. But in 2023, a double lung transplant at Marseille University Hospital changed everything.
The operation allowed him to slowly regain his breath—and the will to push his limits once again. “If someone had told me back then that I’d be able to run 3 kilometers, it would have given me so much courage to go through with the surgery despite the risks,” he recalls with emotion.
More Than a Sporting Challenge: A New Beginning
On November 9, 2025, Pierre will take part in the Nice–Cannes Marathon relay, running between Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cagnes-sur-Mer under the colors of IHU RespirERA. He will be joined by Professor Charles-Hugo Marquette, Director of Clinical Research at the institute, as well as healthcare professionals and other members of the IHU team—all united by the same belief: to breathe, to run, to live… together.
Now serving as President of the IHU RespirERA Patient Committee, Pierre is actively involved in representing patients and making their voices heard within the institute. His commitment reflects his desire to turn his experience into a message of hope and solidarity.
A Source of Inspiration and Pride for IHU RespirERA
Through its research projects and prevention initiatives, IHU RespirERA works every day to better understand, prevent, and treat respiratory diseases. Pierre Bellec’s story and engagement perfectly embody the institute’s spirit: combining science, humanity, and dedication to restore breath, hope, and confidence to those who need it most.
