Exposome 2026 Congress in Nice: addiction, environment, and respiratory health at the heart of a scientific event chaired by Prof. Paul Hofman.

Exposome Congress 2026: understanding the impact of addictions on respiratory health

04/08/2026

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, in Nice, IHU RespirERA will host the 3rd edition of the Exposome Congress, a scientific event dedicated to exploring the interactions between the environment, addictive behaviors, and respiratory health.
The event will take place at the Hôtel Le Saint Paul, under the presidency of Professor Paul Hofman, Director of IHU RespirERA and an internationally recognized expert in respiratory health.

A better understanding of the exposome to improve prevention of respiratory diseases

The concept of the exposome encompasses all environmental exposures an individual experiences throughout life, including air quality, lifestyle habits, inhaled substances, and socio-environmental factors.
This 3rd edition of the Exposome Congress builds on this comprehensive approach, with a particular focus on the impact of addictions on respiratory health.

Discussions will notably address the effects of tobacco, electronic cigarettes, cannabis, and other inhaled substances (cocaine, heroin, crack, inhalant gases), in relation to the development and worsening of respiratory diseases.

Addictions and respiratory health: complex mechanisms at the heart of discussions

The scientific work presented will focus on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms likely to influence individual vulnerability to addictive substances.
The aim is to better understand why some individuals develop severe respiratory conditions, while others appear less affected despite similar exposures.

This integrative approach seeks to better link addictive behaviors to respiratory diseases, in order to improve prevention, diagnostic, and patient management strategies, within a framework of environmental health.

Educational objectives of the Exposome Congress 2026
