IHU RespirERA Launches a New Excellence Program in Thoracic Pathology

The RespirERA University Hospital Institute (IHU) is strengthening its educational mission by launching a new specialized training program in thoracic pathology as part of the Anatomical and Cytological Pathology residency (Diploma of Specialized Studies - DES). Designed for the 2025–2026 promotion, this initiative aims to train the next generation of pathologists..

As part of its commitment to innovation and education in respiratory health, IHU RespirERA has developed a cutting-edge academic program. Led by Dr. Véronique Hofman and supervised by Professor Marius Ilié, head of the DES in Anatomical and Cytological Pathology, this course brings together the thoracic pathology experts of the IHU.

A Comprehensive Program Addressing Current Medical Challenges

The curriculum is designed to cover the full spectrum of thoracic diseases, from the most common to the rarest. It is structured around four main thematic pillars:

  • Pulmonary Tumor Pathology : An in-depth module on the various types of lung cancers (squamous cell carcinomas, adenocarcinomas, neuroendocrine tumors…), with a strong focus on molecular genetics and predictive biomarkers, which are essential for personalized medicine.
  • Non-Tumoral Pulmonary Pathology : An exploration of interstitial lung diseases, granulomatous disorders, and infectious diseases.
  • Pleural Pathology : A study of mesotheliomas, rare tumors, and pleural cytology.
  • Mediastinal Pathology : A course centered on thymomas, thymic carcinomas, and diagnostic strategies for mediastinal biopsies.

A Faculty of Renowned Experts

This training is delivered by a team of clinicians and researchers recognized for their expertise in thoracic pathology: Dr. Véronique Hofman, Professor Marius Ilié, Professor Paul Hofman, and Dr. Samantha Goffinet. Their involvement ensures that residents receive training aligned with the latest scientific advances and clinical practices.

This initiative perfectly illustrates IHU RespirERA’s commitment to becoming a center of excellence not only in research and clinical care but also in education, by preparing future pathologists to meet the complex challenges of respiratory diseases.
