Addictions and new psychoactive substances have become a major public health issue, both in France and worldwide. To advance research and strengthen prevention, IHU RespirERA took part in the International Congress on Addictions and New Psychoactive Substances, held in Nice under the scientific direction of Prof. Amine Benyamina (AP-HP) and Prof. Faredj Cherikh (CHU de Nice and IHU RespirERA).
An international congress tackling a global challenge
Bringing together more than 100 researchers from around the world, the event provided a valuable opportunity to share the latest scientific knowledge and public health strategies to better understand, detect, and manage addictions. The discussions highlighted the growing threat of new synthetic drugs, particularly among adolescents and young adults.
Pulmonary effects still underestimated
During the congress, Prof. Paul Hofman, Director of IHU RespirERA, emphasized that addictions, beyond tobacco, are frequently associated with radiological and histological lung lesions, which often remain underestimated.
These pulmonary damages can result from vaping, or the consumption of substances such as cocaine, amphetamines, and other new synthetic drugs.
These findings reinforce the need for greater public awareness of the respiratory risks linked to these behaviors.
Inform, prevent, and act: a core commitment of IHU RespirERA
One of the core missions of IHU RespirERA is to strengthen prevention and education in respiratory health. Through public information campaigns and local outreach actions, the institute aims to reach out to the population and raise awareness about the respiratory risks associated with addictions, particularly in the Alpes-Maritimes region.
This commitment is fully aligned with the IHU’s ambition: to reduce the burden of respiratory diseases and improve respiratory health for all.
